Cheater(?) banned during the game-no points?

Hello, Lichess!

I have a question/slight complaint. I just finished this game, or rather it got finished, without opponent resigning. Seems he violated the rules in some way. I got awarded the win, but not the points. Here is the game.

I even got a much better position in the end, and he literally got banned mid-game.

It just seems wrong to me not to award points if it counts as a win, although "by banned opponent" so to speak. If he got banned a couple minutes later, I would get those points. Is there some reason this is necessary?

I would suggest an idea-don't ban people while they are in the middle of a game, let it play out, and if the cheater wins, give back points to the loser, (I know that already happens anyway) but this is punishing the person who is not cheating also. Let the game finish!

Although, I'm very surprised to get such a position against a cheater, maybe he got banned for some other reason, in which case it is even worse to not get points.

Letting your game finish would be a worse punishment for you than aborting it because you won't get points for the game.
Cheaters hurt the game and the players. You got hurt (a bit) because of the cheater, not the ban process.

You can't expect to get free points just because you're playing against a cheater.
The refund policy (lichess.org/faq#rating-refund) only applies to finished games.
A ban is a ban, there's no point in letting a cheater keep their ongoing games, it's only unfair to everybody.

I'm sorry you got paired with a cheater in the first place, but that player is the only one to blame for this game being aborted for you. If any, we should be thankful to Lichess for the gratuitous efforts to keep the site clean so promptly.
@Haymarket

If you take issue with the phrase "for a win you are awarded x number of points", ok, you earn the points. The result of the game clearly says "white won", so I think I earned my points.

Can we atleast agree that when Lichess aborts a game you play against a cheater, it is not only punishing to the cheater? Because I used my time to play the game, and even got a much better position.

And what do you think about my idea of not banning people mid-game?

I disagree, if I win
But I kinda get how even a win against a cheater shouldn't count for the rating pool, since I didn't play a genuine player.

Anyway, cheaters suck, and I agree, good job lichess for banning the guy.

That's precisely my point when I said it would be even more punishment to let you finish it.
You're being punished since the moment you started playing that game, but it's the cheater's fault.
The sooner it gets aborted the less you get punished, because that game won't count.

There's no point in letting a cheater keep their ongoing games. Because the next question would be: where do we draw the timecontrol line? Will you let them finish a 30+0 game? Or a correspondence game?

I think no lines make sense. A ban is a ban and the sooner that player stops interacting with anyone else the better.

Amen!
@pepellou

Thanks for your replies, I get now why it is the right thing to ban them immediately. I guess I was just butthurt at the moment cuz it felt like I got robbed of a winning position. But it is completely the cheaters fault.

As I always say,
A true player never complain about rating loss.
Just play, if you find anything suspicious then report and move on!
