Who is Lichess, the organisation

It's fun to speculate, but thibault being fired would result in a cessation of lichess.org operations within days or weeks, even if an engineer of Linus Torvalds caliber were hired to replace him. He is the author of about 97% of the code and does a lot of the admin as well, and that sort of institutional knowledge takes years to develop from scratch.

In this case it is not
Although he is the founder
Lichess became an organization
With a structure
Thibault in this case is the main developer
Not like the current president of the organization (who may also change over time)

Gah! This is rather bleak! Especially coming from a lichess dev. I don't want thibault to go anywhere but I'd like to see lichess have a higher "bus factor" than 1, which he discussed on the Perpetual Chess podcast way back in 2017. At that time he said the bus factor was up to 4, I think. Maybe things have changed and the site is more dependent on him now.

In any case, it would be a huge blow to lose thibault, of course. I hope he continues to enjoy working on the project for a long time to come! And, you're *all* doing a great job.

- Lichess is a non-profit organization, which means that it is administratively recognized as such.

- Thibault is the one who had the idea of making Lichess and he is surrounded by a team of mods.

- Thibault is neither leader, nor boss, nor president. Lichess works collectively, with the work of the entire team, itself separated into several other work teams according to the skills of each on different points (bugs, moderation, improvement of the platform).

- in the event of Thibault's disappearance, nothing will change administratively, Lichess keeps its associative status (unless there is a change in French legislation).

- Nevertheless, this would represent an immense emotional loss because Thibault is the one who had the idea of Lichess and made it happen with the right people. There is no reason to change the way Lichess works. and Thibault has no responsibility other than for the reasons I mentioned above

But what if your employer were to suddenly change your job description to "fill Lichess with ads and trackers, and introduce premium accounts"?

Are you saying if (God forbids!) tomorrow Thibault is ran over by a car or kidnapped by a chess.com goon, that would be the end of Lichess?

Theoretically it could be done, but I think the Lichess organization would become a for-profit company and not a non-profit company.

Not necessarily, but if we did survive as a similarly run org with similar goals, it would not be a smooth transition. There would be a year or two of churn and pain. And that's with a new full-time paid engineer dedicated to thibault's many roles on board.

If we have trouble paying for one of those now, imagine how hard it would be to do so after donations are cut in half because of 6 months of outages.

The good news is I have just learned from FOX news that there are no cars in France, so thibault should be safe.
