Learning to Program

Hi all:

Does anyody know the best way to learn how to program that had absolutely no experience in the area when they first started out?

I wanted to know if it is possible to learn how to program from scratch without going to college and just learning from online sources such as videos, websites, or books that are free. I tried freecodecamp and codeacademy, which are completely free, but I gave up on them since they do not go in much depth and I didn't feel like I was improving.

Anybody feedback would be appreciated.

"coursera" is a website that has some free lectures and you can learn together with others there
