Swindles 4
The invincible rook.Read Practical Chess 4 first.
This swindle is so common for me that I made a whole other article out of it. Here are some more examples of the same thing. The theme is the same every time - I'm losing, but I have a rook left, so give suicide checks with it when otherwise stalemated.
Simples
The rook is invincible, but has to be captured.
Repeated checks
This time I spent all of moves 39-44 getting into position by giving up all remaining pawns and stalemating my king, before employing the rook checks again to draw the game, chasing the opponent all around the board.
When you don't even need to
Sometimes material's level but you've gotta still do it just for the flair.
Another queen
These examples are few and far between.
Quick!
I'm stalemated! Get rid of those pawns!
They had no way out of this one
Waiting patiently
Sometimes it's a very long wait.
Middle of the board
Stuck in the middle of the board, I still pushed my last pawns and headed towards the edge.
The very long setup
Here I spot that I'm stalemated in the position shown and spend 10 moves giving up the last 2 pawns and both rooks, all while defending against checkmates.
